Binge Like A Winner

Ellen binged for “15 years.” Her life was a non-stop binge. She’d eat a row of Oreos at lunch and 2 bags of chips at night. She was overweight and unhappy.

The one day she woke up with a realization: the way a “winner” binges, as she put it, is they will eat that row of Oreos for lunch, but it stops there. People with weight issues keep on bingeing.

Everyone binges at some time of their lives. It’s normal. We get in trouble when we make bingeing a way of life, like Ellen did. A row of Oreos will not make us gain weight. It’s the habitual eating of rows of Oreos that will.

There is obviously a tremendous emotional reason why people binge. After we, we feel a tremendous sense of guilt so we take comfort in restricting your intake. We know that doesn’t work because eventually when we feel life is spinning out of control or we feel depressed, we turn to bingeing again. As the cycle continues, we end up spiraling into deeper feelings of isolation.

There are a few ways to break the habit:

1. Do a fresh-pressed, organic juice cleanse to get off the sugar cycle and establish mindfulness eating habits. When we’re conscious of what we eat, we tend to watch what we eat.

2. Seek counseling or the support of a board certified health coach. As I said above, binge eating is highly emotional. You need to get to the core to what is driving you to binge eat.

3. Stop restricting what we eat. When we restrict, we crave. If we say “no cake,” all we think about is cake, which can become an internal battle inside of us.

 4. Eat 60% of our diet as plant rich, 30% as whole grains, nuts and seeds and, if you wish, a lean protein and 10% as whatever you like. We can’t be perfect and besides, what is perfection? An illusion in our head.

I’d love to hear your suggestions what you do to get off the binge cycle.

Getting Laid Off Was Truly A Blessing!

Mary (name changed) disliked her job, but it brought her a decent income that enabled her to live in a nice home in a beautiful neighborhood.

Day after day, she dreaded getting out of bed. She dragged herself to the office, politely greeted her colleagues and sat down at her desk for another unfulfilling day of work.

Mary considered herself lucky because she had a good job so she tolerated the situation.

What very few people knew about Mary is that she loved children. Mary felt, though, that she’d have to take a drastic cut in pay if she made a switch to work as a teacher.

As the days dragged on, Mary’s energy levels kept falling. One day her boss called her into his office and said, “Mary, your job performance is not what it used to be. Frankly, you don’t seem very satisfied with your work. Think about if you really want to be here.”

Mary hesitated, “Are you letting me go?’

“Not yet, but consider this a warning.”

Mary went home utterly depressed, but as she thought about it, she realized that her boss’ warning was a wake up call.

That night Mary decided that she was going to start interviewing at preschools and go back to school at night for her Masters in Education. She was ready to struggle financially for the freedom from the misery of the daily grind.

The next morning for the first time in years, Mary woke up smiling.

Approximately 8 years have passed since Mary decided to switch careers. During that period, she received her masters and is now working as a 4th Grade teacher in one of the Newton Public Schools. Her salary is less than what she had made, but she still has benefits and more free time. Her students adore her and every morning she wakes up, she can’t wait to teach.  She downsized to an apartment in the South end where there’s so much more to do and she now has a robust social life.

We get stuck in old patterns because that’s what is comfortable to us. We live in fear of change because it’s unfamiliar and scary. Sometimes we have to shut the door and take the plunge the way Mary did so that we can live a more fulfilling, happier life.

Is there something in your life you’re afraid to let go of because of fear of taking the plunge? A job? A relationship? A home that you can’t really afford?

Sometimes we need that push, like Mary’s boss did. That’s what a fresh-pressed, organic juice Reboot does: it is a safe way to make a small change so that you feel more confident making bigger changes.

Oo la la Tarragon

I was in France approximately a year ago eating at a bistro. I overheard the Frenchmen next to me exclaim, “«l’estragon dans ce steak est magnifique.” Translation, “the tarragon in this steak is magnificent.”

When is the last time you were out for dinner in the United States and heard someone comment about tarragon in such an expressive way?

Tarragon is delicious and, like many herbs, has so many medicinal properties.

Tarragon is known as the “king of herbs” in France, has not been as widely used in the United States.

The ancient Greeks chewed tarragon to treat toothaches because of its ability to numb the mouth. Tarragon contains iodine (which so many of us Americans are deficient), which aids digestion and helps detox. It has also been used as a mild sedative, to treat depression and in heart disease prevention.

So the next time you’re roasting some vegetables or making a stew, consider using tarragon.

What dishes do you recommend cooking that involves tarragon?

Surrounding Ourselves with Negative People Causes Brain Damage

Here comes the complainer. Time to take cover.

It turns out that as little as 30 minutes of “exposure to nonstop negativity actually impairs brain function,” according to an article in Inc. Magazine. That’s right, listening to constant negativity can actually make us dumb.

Complainers are not looking for a solution; they’re looking to voice negativity. If you’re not careful, you can easily get sucked in and become a complainer yourself.

Also be weary of people who say they’re “realists.” That’s a feeble justification to mask negativity.

Do You Have Toxic Hunger?

Have you tried every diet and still are yo-yoing? Have you lost weight and then gained even more back?

We receive so much bad information telling us to eat less, exercise more and watch our calories.

As most of us hopefully have learned by now, that’s the perfect storm for unsuccessful weight loss.

First and foremost, we need to make certain our body is properly nourished with micro-nutrients, which are vitamins and minerals that are essential for growth and metabolism.

If we’re not receiving adequate micronutrients, we enter into what Dr. Joel Furhman, author of the highly recommended books Eat to Live and The End of Diabetes, calls toxic hunger.

What is toxic hunger? Well, first a brief lesson on metabolism that I’m borrowing largely from Dr. Furman because he explains it so articulately.

This is extremely important to understand so I advise you to read it slowly. I’ve written it in the simplest terms possible:

There are 2 parts of metabolism:

The anabolic phase, when we eat and digest to build our body.

The catabolic phase, when we’re breaking down what we ate and living off of what we saved when we stored our food.

This is represented in the analogy when we fill up our car with gas (anabolic phase) and drive away (catabolic phase).

The catabolic phase is when we heal, detoxify and repair, which can be very uncomfortable because our body is circulating toxins for removal.

This catabolic phase is particularly uncomfortable when we consume:

  • Processed and refined foods
  • Large portion sizes
  • Foods with pesticides and hormones
  • Other foods that do not meet our micro-nutrient needs

These foods cause the build up of free radicals, which cause even more toxicity.

In order to stop the discomfort, we start to eat, which puts us back into the anabolic phase. Now that we ate, we feel better, which makes us think we were hungry. That’s called Toxic Hunger.

When we stop eating, we feel withdrawal symptoms, which means discomfort, which makes us want to eat again. In other words, many of us are addicted to eating, which is a major reason for obesity.

Toxic hunger is not true hunger. So what is true hunger?

First a brief discussion of brain metabolism:

The brain utilizes approximately 90% of our caloric needs. We burn approximately 50 calories per minute when we’re not exercising so the brain uses approximately 45 of those calories.

The brain can only be fueled by glycogen. When glycogen that is converted into glucose is used up, the body can break down muscle tissue to make glucose for the brain. It can not burn fat to make glucose for the brain. You can use fat for exercise and activity, but not for the brain’s use.

The body doesn’t want to break down muscle tissue. It would prefer that we eat. So, when the glycogen is used up, we feel genuinely hungry, which feels like a heightened sense of taste in the mouth and throat.

Our bodies are very intelligent and know exactly what to eat to maintain our lean body mass so that we don’t use it to burn glycogen for the brain. Hunger, in other words, protects our lean body mass.

When we eat healthy, we do not experience catabolic discomfort. Our body will tell us exactly how much to eat and we will maintain our proper weight.

This means that when we’re overweight, we have eaten outside the demands of true hunger due to recreation and food addiction.

I also wanted to briefly add that it generally takes 4 hours to burn fat. That means most of us should:

Eat breakfast and wait 4 hours
Eat lunch and wait 4 hours
Eat dinner and not eat after!

The secret to great health is achieving micronutrient adequacy so you get in touch w true hunger. This is exactly why doing a fresh-pressed, 100% organic Reboot is so crucial for our health: so that we get the micronutrients we need so that we feel true hunger, not toxic hunger.

Time to get off the toxic hunger cycle!

Seriously, what are you waiting for to get energized, balanced and in control of your life?

A Wake Up Call That Put Me Back on Track

I practice yoga when I wake up every morning at my home. I haven’t had the time to go to yoga class, and I thought that my home practice was sufficient.

This morning I had a big revelation how wrong I was.

For the first time in months, I attended yoga class with one of my favorite teachers. I could keep up with the class, but what I learned was how unfocused I was.

At one point, the teacher said, and I swear he was looking at me, “focus on a single point.” At that moment, I realized that I was surveying all the people in the class and what they were drinking.

The teacher continued, “When we’re focused, we eliminate the chatter so that we can focus on the moment.”

There it was. The reason to practice yoga. It is not just to get ourselves in these contorted positions, although that’s a part of it. It’s to make us more grounded so that we can operate more effectively in life by eliminating the drama.

A couple weeks ago I received a phone call from a client who is a very well known interior designer. She was disgruntled because a contractor whom one of her clients wanted her to work with on a project had a horrible attitude. She said, “Every suggestion I make, he shuts me off and says, ‘I’m the contractor, I know better.’ I am so upset and worried that the project is not going to come out the way I’d like it to and that’s a reflection on me.”

I asked, “Have you spoken to the contractor?”

She responded, “Well I’ve attempted to assert my ideas, but I really haven’t sat down and spoken with him. He has such an attitude. I don’t think it will help.”

We spoke about strategies regarding what she would discuss in the meeting and how to present it.

This past week, she called and relayed, “The meeting went great, although I feel horribly for the contractor. It turns out he just separated from his wife so he was taking it out on me. He apologized to me for his bad attitude. Now we’re working so much better together.”

Instead of taking action and getting to the root of the issue right away, without even realizing it, my client was allowing the contractor’s problems to cause drama in her own life. As a result, she was not performing optimally, which really would have been a negative reflection on her work.

A key to peaceful, balanced living is calming the chatter in our minds. Yoga is most definitely one means. Others include meditation, exercise and, of course, a JOOS Reboot!

Week after week I extol the health benefits of a fresh-pressed, 100% organic Reboot. I hope by now many of you realize that it just isn’t about eating healthy food; it’s also about gaining emotional control so that we lead balanced, energized lives.

This One Simple Action Can Lead to Happiness

One simple action reminded me how change ultimately brings greater happiness, but not right away.

The simple change I made involved, of all things,  purchasing a pair of minimalist sneakers. When I went to the running store to purchase a new pair of sneakers, the sales person at first guided me to sneakers that were similar to those I have always worn. Just as she was about to bring them out for me, she paused and said pointing to the minimalist sneakers, “let’s try these.”

I was a competitive runner for many years and my running technique has been ingrained in me. I also have a few chronic injuries that have caused me pain. I had heard about the benefits of minimalist sneakers: how they make you feel like you’re running barefoot, how they’re good for your back and hips. I also heard if you don’t run in them properly, you could end up with even more injuries.

The sales person at the running store was patient with me: she taught me how to change my running style to accommodate these new sneakers. It required my striking the ground with my mid-foot instead of my heal. She also instructed me to run more upright.

The first couple days I thought I had made a dreadful mistake. With every step I took, I was convinced that I was running incorrectly and would injure myself. My runs were short and unsatisfying. Then today, when I went for my run in the woods, I literally felt like I was flying. I ran as fast as I did when I stopped running seriously many years ago. It was truly exhilarating!

The thoughts in our mind are a reflection of the way we live our life. If we believe we can’t do something, then we won’t do it, at least well. I thought that I would never be able to run long distances comfortably again. It turns out that wasn’t the case.

Cleansing is a powerful tool to help us replace the weak limiting thoughts with empowering thoughts so that we feel more confidant making changes.

What are you waiting for to feel your absolute best?

10 Reasons to Eat Grapefruits

Seasonal eating is essential to good health, which is why I am constantly writing about what we should be eating in a particular season.

Generally, fruits are eaten more in abundance during the summer because they are easy to digest and high in sugars, which cools us down.

Grapefruits, though, are a great fruit to eat during the winter. It also has incredible health benefits, including:

  • Immune system booster, thanks to the high amount of Vitamin C. Several studies suggest that Vitamin C-rich foods may help reduce cold symptoms or severity of cold symptoms.
  • Reduce the severity of inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, also due to the high amount of Vitamin C and organic salicylic acid.
  • Promote cardiovascular health. Researchers in Israel recently found that red and white grapefruit contain powerful antioxidants that may help decrease the risk of heart disease.
  • Protect against lung and colon cancer.
  • Act as a liver tonic.
  • Decrease the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones.
  • Slow down the progression of atherosclerosis.
  • Inhibit tumor formation, since grapefruits are rich in lycopene (the red color/pigment).
  • Reduce cholesterol levels. The February 2006 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, scientists found that serving heart by-pass patients the equivalent of one grapefruit a day significantly reduced cholesterol levels.
  • Promote weight loss, since it contains high in fat burning enzymes.
Grapefruits are also a great winter fruit. Enjoy!
