Meet a Woman Who Takes Control of Her Life and Loves It!

I’ve known Lisa Lewtan for a number of years as the entrepreneurial go-getter. There’s not a lot of drama in what Lisa does. In fact it’s quite simple. When she wants something, she goes after it.

I met another side of Lisa approximately 2 weeks ago that I hadn’t anticipated. We met for tea at Cafe L’Aroma. Each time I see Lisa, she looks like she just stepped out from a Cosmo shoot and this time was no different.

Frankly, I had anticipated talking about what two suburban mothers typically discuss: children, schools, etc. I didn’t know, though, that Lisa is a regular meditator, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a certified “Let Your Yoga Dance and “Journey Dance” instructor. Lisa’s passion is to help people “let it go” and not take life or themselves so seriously.

When I left our meeting, I had that uplifting feeling when you meet with someone who is so full of positive, grounded energy.

I love having the type of paradigm shifts I experienced with Lisa. We judge people by their appearance and then find how wrong we were. This happened to me when I did my first weekend long meditation seminar with Sharon Salzberg, New York Times best selling author of Lovingkindness and several other books. I walked into the room and saw a very overweight, unattractive middle-aged woman. With terrible judgement, I thought, “I’m going to spend a whole weekend with her.” She must have read my mind because at that very moment, she looked at me with the most penetratingly beautiful smile. At that instant, my thoughts shifted to, “How lucky that I’m going to spend a whole weekend with her.”

From that experience, I learned that there is much more depth to each person, despite their appearances. Each of us has an interesting story to tell. The problem is that many of us are too wrapped up in carrying all the baggage from our past into the present moment and future. As a result, we’re uptight, vindictive, depressed and/or any number of negative emotions.

Just like you and me, Lisa and Sharon have their own issues, but they don’t allow those issues to dictate their lives. That’s why it is such a joy to spend time with them.

I had a health session with a client who battled with weight issues. She told me that her father used to tell her that she was “not good enough.” She married a man who let her know that she’s “not good enough.” She identified herself with “not good enough” so sadly she made herself “not good enough.” No wonder her mood and appearance were both heavy.

This client didn’t have a choice to be born into such a difficult family, but she does have a choice to disengage from it. The sad reality is she decided to live with the “comfort” she was familiar.

A fresh-pressed, organic juice cleanse in which you eat clean foods is a first step to move beyond our past traumas so that we can live a more fulfilling, satisfying life.

Cleanse and you may just find an even better “comfort” zone!

Know Your Metabolism

Many Pilgrims who came to the New World who had fast metabolisms starved to death during the winter.  Conversely, the Pilgrims with slow metabolisms lived.

Having a fast metabolism definitely serves a purpose when it comes to survival. Simply put, people with fast metabolisms do not need as much food to survive. The problem is that we’re living in such a rich country with so much abundance that we tend to indulge ourselves.

I witness this in my own household with my children and the lesson is counter-intuitive. My girls have faster metabolisms than does my son. Although he’s bigger than they are, you would expect that he needs more food. In reality, it’s just the opposite. He actually eats less than my daughters and has just as much energy.

The greatest challenge is to control our impulses, which can seem like an insurmountable feat to many of us. A few weeks ago I wrote about how we value what is rare to us. Conversely, when we grow accustomed to so much abundance, as we have in the US, we start to take things for granted, which often leads to unhappiness and impulses to fill the void of emptiness.

Each week my focus is on slowing down to make space so that we can live more fulfilling, happier lives. We’re not going to lose weight and sustain it if we’re stressed, agitated and depressed. We will, though, if we live in gratitude. Sounds overly simplistic, but it leads to powerful results.

Try this: for one week, write down two to three reasons you are grateful. For example, our own health, the health of our children, the person who let you cut them in line at the grocery store because you were in a rush, the man who held the door open for you, etc.

You will be amazed how much more positive your outlook is in just a few days. Do you know where that leads? To a better attitude about taking care of yourself, eating healthy and losing weight sustainably.

The JOOS Reboot is a powerful tool to develop mindfulness so that we can slow down and feel more balanced and control in our every day lives. Once we develop this pattern of eating consciously, we become more aware of what and how we’re eating, which leads to sustained weight loss.

Life Lessons

Friends and pets can teach us valuable lessons and I learned a few invaluable ones from my friend and JOOS CFO, Sherri Wolf, and my dog, Windsor, but in different ways, that could lead to permanent weight loss and a more fulfilling life.

Starting with Sherri, she is a very active mother of 3 children and the master of organization and routine. Her filing systems are in place so she knows where to locate documents. Her daily routine is pretty standard: she wakes up and goes for a run, does her volunteer and career work in the mornings, takes care of her children in the afternoon and helps the children with homework at night while she finishes up with her outstanding items for work. She and her family eat 3 healthy meals per day so they don’t over eat. In other words, each day, the over all routine is essentially the same, but her life is so fulfilling because she’s constantly doing differently activities.

From Sherri, I learn the value of maintaining a routine in my daily life and implementing organizational systems.

On to my dog, Windsor, most dogs assume either the alpha or beta role. I watch my other dog, Odie, an alpha dog, become upset when another dog threatens his authority. Windsor, on the other hand, doesn’t care. All he wants to do is play with other dogs. So, when another dog assumes the alpha role, Windsor becomes the beta and when another dog is a beta, Windsor becomes the alpha. As a result, he gets along well with just about any dog.

From Windsor, I learn that his priority, that is, having fun and playing, is paramount and he doesn’t get side tracked with positioning in the dog tribe. As a result, his life is fun and relatively stress-free.

When it comes to losing weight and maintaining our ideal weight, establishing clear priorities, keeping organized and establishing a routine are absolutely essential.

This may sound daunting for many of us, but essential to live a fulfilling life and reduce your stress.

Getting to YOUR Solution

Geneen Roth wrote in her book Women, Food and Godthat none of us will be able to lose weight on a sustainable basis until we get to the root of WHY you’re overeating.

Geneen Roth’s premise is that “The way you eat is inseparable from your core beliefs about being alive…When you begin to understand what prompts you to use food as a way to numb or distract yourself, the process takes you deeper into realms of spirit and to the bright center of your own life.”

I counseled a woman who “told” me she wanted to lose weight, but I could tell from our first meeting that, consciously or not, she was going to use our sessions that she wasn’t ready yet to give up the pain from her past and move forward.

She went on multiple diets to prove that she was doing everything she could to lose weight, but nothing worked because, in her mind, she was “destined to be overweight.” She was undergoing a lot of emotional pain and suffering, but each time I tried to pull it out, she retreated and said, “my pain is not nearly as bad as other people’s.”

Gallant? I don’t know. To me, it’s irrelevant if her pain is worse or better. The bottom line is that she needs to resolve that pain – let herself FEEL THE PAIN – if she is going to move forward with her life on a road to happiness.

Plain and simply, she is self-medicating through food to numb the pain.

The JOOS Reboot cleanses can kick start healthy and enjoyable eating habits, but first you must be commited to breaking your cycle of pain! Our JOOS Health Coaches/Cleanse

Experts would love to support you through this process so you can see how energized, balanced and in-control you feel just by eating a plant rich diet..

Positive Power

I came back to my bunk at summer camp when I was 12 years-old in a rotten mood because I had performed terribly in a horse show. The last place I wanted to be was in a bunk meeting listening to one of my counselors discuss how our bunk was messy and we had to pull ourselves together. I mostly was staring at the floor in front of me, but at one moment, I looked up and saw a fellow camper, Lori Tyler, staring into my eyes and smiling. At that moment, all the ugly feelings disappeared.

Obviously that smile had a strong impact on me because I still remember it vividly today. Lori is probably unaware how she affected me and how an act so small as a smile could have such a profound effect.

Conversely, we all know the impact we’re having on our children, our partner and/or our co-workers by walking around in an agitated state, stressed and anxious. It is by no means a stretch to say that this type of behavior compounds itself because our frustration/anger/impatience often leads us to act in ways that hurt us even more, such as through binge eating, smoking, taking drugs, etc.

Many of us turn to food even when we’re not hungry because we’re feeling hungry for something we are unable to name. Perhaps it’s anger at ourselves for yelling at our children or at a spouse for cheating on us and depriving us of the loving relationship.

Each week my focus is on slowing down to make space so that we can live more fulfilling, happier lives. We’re not going to lose weight and sustain it if we’re stressed, agitated and depressed.

Discover Yourself Through Cleansing

A yoga friend said to me 6 years ago “You don’t know yoga if you don’t know John Friend.”

Recently, John friend was forced to resign from the Anusura yoga movement he founded because he was accused of sexual impropriety with female students and other charges.

John Friend is yet another person who mis-used power. Bottom line is that we’re all just human and no one is worth idolizing.

Many of you ask me why I write about topics that seemingly don’t have anything to do with cleansing, but the story of John Friend has everything to do with cleansing.

Cleansing is about taking a break in our own lives so we can find our own truth and what works best for us. In the context of how we eat, it’s about discovering what foods are best for our bodies and how and when we should eat them. For example, some of us with fast metabolisms may need to eat several meals per day, but for those of us with slower metabolisms, one meal per day may suffice. It means that for some of us, following a raw diet may be completely acceptable, but for others, we feel better when we eat animal protein every so often.

A few years ago just after a very painful divorce, someone who I deeply respected at the time told me that if I were to be raw, I would feel empowered. I was raw for one year and it was truly one of the worst years of my life. My stomach was distended and I was too skinny. After that year, I did a cleanse and simultaneously had my first Ayurvedic consultation. This experience had such a profound influence me that I founded a company, JOOS, based on both of the principles.

From the cleansing experience, I learned the invaluable lesson to slow down and be more mindful. When my life spins out of control, I now have this basis to return to in cleansing.

From the Ayurveda experience I learned that every body type has different needs and that what is good for one may be highly detrimental to another.

The JOOS Reboot Cleanse allows us to become more mindful so that we are better able to put life into perspective and achieve our life goals. Find out how by speaking with one of our certified Health Coaches who have helped hundreds of people.

Nutrient-rich JOOS: Feel The Difference!

Many years ago I attended a running camp led by Bill Rodgers. Some of the top runners world-wide were also present. What amazed me was that when we sat on the floor to stretch with our legs in front of us, none of us could sit upright and barely any of us could touch our knees.

Part of this was because hardly any of us stretched regularly. Another reason is because we built up so much lactic acid that we become inflexible. This also can lead to injuries, crankiness, burn out and even illness (as I experienced).

I teach my 11-year-old daughter, Julia, who is a competitive soccer player, of the need to eat alkaline foods to neutralize the acidity so that she can perform optimally and prevent injury. A week ago before a soccer match, she was feeling particularly tired. I handed her a bottle of our Green Lemonade. After the first sip, her eyes lit up and she said, “Boy Mom, You can feel the difference right away.”

We have become so disconnected to what nutrients do for us and it’s not entirely our fault. After all, look at the typical cereal box. It is fortified with a number of vitamins and nutrients, but they’re really hardly helping us. In fact, we still get sick after eating these fortified foods. The reason is that the nutrients are hardly bio-available in the human body.

Nutrients from JOOS are among the most bioavailable in the human body than any other food or beverage anywhere. That’s why we feel so energetic, satisfied and rejuvenated after we drink it.

You can drink JOOS whenever you want, but it feels particularly good to drink after hot yoga, a tennis match or a long run to neutralize the lactic acid we built up from intense exercise.

6 Steps to Take You When You’re Low

At the Joanne Langione Dance Recital this past weekend, at which my 3 daughters performed, mother after mother told me that it was a very difficult week for them. What was in the air? Admittedly, it was an extraordinarily difficult week for me.

Fortunately, there was this little voice inside of me that said, “keep it together because this is going to pass.” I took 6 very important steps to carry me through it:

1. I went with the dark mood instead of fought against it. We often forget that emotions pass. Instead we make them our identity and become that emotion. No matter how painful it got this past week, I sat with it with the confidence that an important lesson would emerge from it. Instead of the painful emotional lasting many days, it only lasted 3, and I emerged learning a profound lesson: that no matter what anyone did to me, I’m still a sweet person who loves my children, friends, family and community dearly.

2. I armored myself against the binge. As we all know, in our weakened states, we have a tendency to cause destruction to our bodies through smoking, drinking, taking drugs and/or binge eating, to name a few. Since my go to foods are those with a crunch, I made certain my cabinets were full of healthy foods, like Trader Joes Seaweed Snacks, Quinoa and Bean Chips and Falafel Chips, that would satisfy my desire in my weakened emotional state. As a result, I emerged without gaining a pound.

3. I increased my consumption of fresh, organic JOOS to 3 per day. Stress sucks the nutrients right out of us, which leaves us feeling even lower and depleted. I still had to go about my day taking care of my children and running our company, which made consuming the highest quality plant rich nutrients to combats the heightened stress essential for me.

4. I surrounded myself with loving people who supported me through it. I expressed gratitude to them daily.

5. I made certain to exercise daily, even if it was just for 10 minutes. My schedule is so busy with 4 kids and running a business that it can be very difficult to find time to exercise. Often, too, the last thing we want to do when we’re feeling low is exercise, particularly because we’re feeling so depleted. As we know, sitting around makes us feel even worse. Exercise stimulates endorphins and helps our moods.

6. I reread Lovingkindness by Sharon Saltzberg. This book helps put life back into perspective and reminds us that it’s all going to be OK. Other suggestions are books by Pema Chodron, Ram Das, Jack Kornfield, to name a few.

The good news is, the week is done and I’m back on my feet. I didn’t gain a pound, despite the temptation to binge, and I emerged feeling a little more wiser.

Feeling low? It is that much more imperative to consume a diet high in plant rich foods to get yourself back on track!

Plant Rich Diets Help Prevent and Perhaps Even Cure Type 2 Diabetes

Just do a Google search on how  consuming a diet rich in plant rich foods can prevent/reduce and/or perhaps even  curing Type 2 Diabetes and you’ll see a number of primary studies from  prestigious institutions.

For example, you’ll see on by Harvard entitled:  Bottom Line Keeping weight in check, being active, and eating a healthy diet can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes.

Another article published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by a number of institutions, including the Department of Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, the Department of Medicine, Children’s Hospital, Boston to name a couple that stated:

Based on what is known of the components of plant-based diets and their effects from cohort studies, there is reason to believe that vegetarian diets would have advantages in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Here’s another by Leiden University Medical Center Department of Radiology in the Netherlands that found that cutting out calorific foods and eating healthier options for just four months is all diabetes sufferers need to do in order to beat their condition.

“It is striking to see how a relatively simple intervention of a very low-calorie diet  effectively cures Type 2 diabetes,” says Dr Sebastian Hammer from the study. “Moreover, these effects are long term, illustrating the potential of this
method. Lifestyle interventions may have more powerful beneficial cardiac
effects than medication in these patients.”

I often wonder, what is it going to take to convince people that they do not need to walk around with burdensome, unhealthy conditions – that indeed they can be
healthy and live full vibrant lives!
