My daughter’s (Julia) soccer team has been consistently undefeated this season until yesterday when they found themselves down 0 to 2. Near the end of the second half, they looked depleted. A penalty was called on the other team and one of Julia’s teammates had the opportunity to kick a field goal. Just as she was about to kick, I heard her mother yell, “How much do you want this?”
At that moment, the girl clenched her fists, exhaled deeply and as she approached the ball, it was evident from her determined face that it was going to be a powerful kick. It was.
How much do we want this? To lose weight and have the body that we dream? To stop smoking so that we don’t feel winded? To be unburdened by depression or worry so that we can go about our day feeling vibrant and energetic? To be free of aggression and control so that we do not act irrationally and hurt the ones we love?
We have all developed patterns and habits that weigh us down in our every day lives. Many of us choose to live in the “comfort” of the familiarity of a bad habit than to go either through the pain of breaking it and/or feel too fearful of the unknown of what will emerge.
A client who did the JOOS Reboot and lived by the principles of our philosophy to eat 90% of your diet as whole foods, lost approximately 20lbs over a 6 month period. One day she called and said, ”Lauri, I can’t do this anymore. I can’t be thin.” During the conversation, she told me that her whole family was overweight and that the extra weight was like a shield do hide behind. Now she was thin and felt exposed.
We had several coaching sessions and what was so encouraging to me was that, although she was afraid to live with her new body, she was determined to maintain it. Although it’s been a process, it’s been 3 years later and she’s still thin. Even more, she no longer struggles with her weight.
